Scott Media Podcast: A Conversation on Starting Out, Collaboration & PR

I recently had the pleasure of being on the “PR Not BS” podcast with Scott Media, where I shared the story of how my business began, discussed why I firmly believe in collaboration over competition, and opened up about my own PR journey, including a very formative meeting with Liz Perkins.

I wanted to take a moment to reflect here, pull out some of the key moments and lessons, and share them with you in case any of this resonates with your own journey.

How It All Began

Starting a business is never a straight line. For me, the spark came from wanting to do things differently, make an impact, take ownership of my own path.
I talked on the podcast about the early days: the leap into the unknown, the uncertainty and exhilaration, the “will this work?” question that never really goes away.
I emphasised that what often gets overlooked is how important the mindset is, showing up, doing the research, making the connections, being consistent, and also beating the imposter within.

Why I Choose Collaboration Over Competition

One of the themes that came up on the podcast, and one I care deeply about, is the idea that collaboration beats competition.
Often in business we’re told to guard our ideas, protect our territory, fight for the market. I’ve found the opposite works far better. When you open up, share, partner, come alongside others, magic happens.
Here are some of the reasons I favour collab over competition:

  • Shared strengths: We each bring something unique, so collaborating means you complement rather than duplicate, and suddenly your offer becomes richer.
  • Expanding networks: When you collaborate, you tap into new audiences, new contacts, new opportunities you might never have reached alone.
  • Authentic support: There’s a real shift when you move from “how do I beat others?” to “how do we lift each other?”. It changes not just the results, but how you feel doing it.
  • Sustainable growth: Competition can burn you out, collaboration tends to build momentum, goodwill, and trust.

I have learned, that collaboration isn’t for everyone. I’m now more OK with that than I was before. Reaching out to others isn’t always easy, and sometimes the door has been closed in my face, quite literally. I now trust the right people will be aligned with my path and purpose.

The PR Journey (and Meeting Liz Perkins)

PR has always fascinated me. Because at heart it’s about telling stories, shaping messages, connecting with people. It’s not just “getting coverage”, it’s building trust, standing for something meaningful and making noise in a way that feels aligned.
On the podcast with Scott Media we talked about how PR isn’t a one-time magic trick; it’s a process. You need clarity of voice, consistency of message, relationships with people (especially journalists), and an understanding of what value you bring.

What Comes Next

Being on a podcast, is again great PR. It is a platform where I have been able to share more about what happens behind the scenes and the importance of not giving up on a dream. I continue to stay in touch with Liz as well as other journalists, and I will continue to share the importance ofP PR knowing that people will always buy from people. PR is not about promoting your business, it’s about helping people understand the person behind that business.

Putting yourself “out there” can feel intimidating, which is why having the right team with you is vital. That’s why I choose to work closely with Scott Media.

If you are looking to collaborate with someone who loves their business, loves sharing success and wants more people to embrace a bit of “woo”, I would love to hear from you.

Here’s to doing better business, together.
